- There are over 800 types of ficus plants, according to R.W. Henley at the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. The most popular type of ficus is the weeping fig, or Ficus benjamina, which was introduced during the 1950s. It has drooping branches and thick, shiny leaves. This plant can grow as tall as 60 feet. Other varieties include the Ficus lyrata or fiddleleaf fig and the India rubber tree Ficus elastica.
- According to W. P. Armstrong from Palomar College, the ficus tree is revered in India because Gautama Buddha received enlightenment beneath its branches. Figs, the fruits of ficus trees, have been cultivated for over 5,000 years. They were mentioned numerous times in the Bible beginning in Genesis.
- Henley indicates that a bacterial disease called leaf spot commonly affects Ficus benjamina, while fungal problems such as botrytis blight and anthracnose affect the Ficus elastica varieties. Insect species such as thrips, mealybugs and scales also cause damage to ficus trees.
