How to Replace Artificial Plants With Live Plants in an Aquarium

    • 1). Siphon enough water from the aquarium so that you can comfortably reach the aquarium floor. Generally, removing 20 percent of the total water volume is sufficient.

    • 2). Put on an unused pair of long-cuff rubber gloves. Run warm water over the gloves to remove any loose microscopic debris. This minimizes the chances of introducing harmful bacteria into the aquarium.

    • 3). Pull the artificial plants from the base and slowly remove the artificial plants from the aquarium. Be careful not to disrupt any surrounding aquarium hardware (heaters, filters, air stones, decorations).

    • 4). Position live plants in desired location in the aquarium. Plant in approximately 2 to 4 inches of aquarium gravel. If necessary, placing decor stones at the base of the plants can help secure the new plant's position.

    • 5). Refill the aquarium with the same amount of water that was removed in step 1. Add water slowly to minimize the force exerted on the live plants.
