Most of us use some sort of Brass or Stainless Steel Bristle Grill brush to remove the built up caked on grease off our cooking grates. We usually attempt to clean our grids when the grill is still warm or hot with the thought that the grease will be easier to clean.
What you don't realize is that if you use some sort of bristle brush, the bristles are very soft and if the bbq grill is still warm, the bristles will melt. Thus, leaving your grill brush to look like a flat useless mess. Afterwards, we then are tempted to use the almighty scraper at the end of the grill brush. This can be a detriment to your cooking grids, especially porcelain coated and cast iron. These varying types of cooking grids are increasingly popular in most grill brands like Weber, Brinkmann, Charbroil, Charmglow, Kirkland, Turbo by Barbecues Galore, Viking Gas Grills and the list goes on and on.
Keep in mind that once the porcelain chips, the grids will rust quickly leaving you to replace them more often.
In addition, I saw on the news where a man cleaned his cooking grates with a standard metal bristle brush. He became very ill and in pain after eating his steak. After going to the hospital and bewildering doctors, they found that a bristle from his grill brush fell out and got stuck onto his grill grate. This occurred when he cooked his steak, the bristle ended up sticking to his steak and he unknowingly ate it. This bristle lodged itself in his colon and had the ability to scratch it. (True Story)
On my never ending quest to save the environment, I always have my eye out for new and sustainable "Green" methods to clean, cook, etc. In my quest, I happened to find a really cool product called The GrilStone. The Grill Stone is an environmentally friendly grill cleaning block made from recycled glass from landfills and cleans BBQ grills, grates, griddles, smokers, cooking surfaces similar to sand blasting.
You gently rub the block on your cooking surface and remarkably the crud comes off the grid without a scratch. These blocks give amazing results for your barbeque grill grates including porcelain enamel, cast iron, stainless steel and are available at TheBBQDepot.com.
Features:
* Non-toxic
* Works on hot or cold surfaces
* Forms to the shape of the cooking surface to custom fit your grill grate.
BAD to the Bone... If I do say so myself.
