How to Prune an Althea Bush

    • 1). Cut off approximately one-third of the althea branches back to the ground with sharp pruning shears. Choose branches that are old or weak. Choose ones that are growing in the wrong direction or misshapen. Select branches that are growing in overcrowded spots. The branches should be interspersed evenly throughout the shrub.

    • 2). Prune the rest of the althea back to a desired height. Prune stems back to just above their points of origin, which are the parent branches from which they grow.

    • 3). Clip off two or or three flower buds per stem once the althea bush begins blooming. This step is optional and may encourage the remaining buds to produce larger flowers.
