How to Sew Your Own Onbuhimo

    • 1). Cut the table runner in half lengthwise. Turn the raw edge to the inside and hem. Repeat for the second half of the table runner to create the sashes.

    • 2). Pin the end of the sash from Step 1 diagonally on one corner of the short side of the placemat. Overlap the sash so that the end of the sash lines up at a 45-degree angle, creating an equilateral triangle on the corner of the placemat. Stitch securely all the way around the triangle. Repeat with the second sash on the corner closest to the first corner. This side with the sashes in the corner is now the top of the onbu.

    • 3). Lay out the sturdy fabric on the work surface. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise and press. Open the fabric. Fold each of the raw ends toward the center fold line. Fold the piece in half again with the raw edges inside. Press. Stitch the pressed folds together to create a four layer band, 3 inches wide, with a selvage at both ends.

    • 4). Lay the band over the bottom of the placemat opposite the end with the sashes. Center the placemat in the band and stitch in place. Thread one end of the band through a metal ring, fold the band back over the band, and stitch securely in place. Repeat with the second ring on the other side of the band.

    • 5). Place the baby on the placemat with the sashes behind the baby's head. Throw the sashes over your shoulders and cross them behind your back. Bring the sashes back around front and thread each sash through a metal ring on either side of the bottom of the onbu. Pull the sashes with one hand, while supporting the baby with the other as the child snuggles against your chest. Tie the sashes behind your back in a knot.
