- The Education Portal website indicates that many people begin working as sleep lab technicians with only a high school diploma or a GED, depending upon the position. One-year certificate and two-year associate's degree programs are also available at community colleges and vocational schools.
- According to the Oregon Institute of Technology, students who wish to earn a certificate in polysomnographic technology must complete coursework in medical terminology, sleep disorders pathology, and various types of sleep disorders. Students who are pursuing an associate's degree must also take classes in human anatomy and physiology, psychology and biology. All students must complete an unpaid practicum working in a clinical setting.
- Students can choose to become registered polysomnographic technologists by taking an examination through the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists. Registration is not necessary, but it provides the technician with more opportunities for employment and advancement.
