How to Find a car by the Vin Number

    • 1). Locate the VIN for the used vehicle you want to obtain information about. The VIN is on top of the dashboard on the driver's side, under the windshield. A VIN is 17 characters long and consists of a combination of letters and numbers.

    • 2). Write down the VIN.

    • 3). Log onto the Internet and find a website that provides vehicle history reports. A highly credible website that does this is CarFax.com, which is linked below in Resources.

    • 4). Enter the VIN into the website's search field, and then select the associated button to obtain information about the vehicle. On CarFax.com, this is the "Get the CarFax" button, which displays the order form for a vehicle history report.

    • 5). Enter your payment information and select the appropriate order option. Order one report or multiple reports; fees vary.

    • 6). Click the "Process My Order" button (on CarFax.com) to order your vehicle history report.
