Daisy Chain Phone Cabling Instructions

    • 1). Open the network interface device, or NID, located on a wall just outside your home. Look for the short wire that is plugged into a modular jack on the panel inside the NID. Unplug the wire to discontinue power to the telephone wires inside your home.

    • 2). Mount a telephone jack (surface mount RJ-14) on a wall next to each spot where you wish to sit a telephone. Use a screwdriver and screws supplied with the jack to attach the jack onto the wall. Loosen the red and green terminal screws on each jack to allow each terminal screw to accommodate a wire later.

    • 3). Remove 2 inches of cable covering from the tip of a telephone cable, using diagonal pliers. Strip off 1/2 inch of nylon insulation from the tip of each exposed wire, using a wire stripper. Slip the cable through an opening at the base of the NID, and pull up the cable from inside the NID by about 6 inches. Look for the red and green terminal screws beside the short wire, and loosen each screw with a screwdriver.

    • 4). Hook the green wire clockwise around the green terminal screw inside the NID, hook the red wire clockwise around the red terminal screw, and tighten the screws to secure the connection. Run the cable along baseboards, walls or inside ceilings from the NID to the first telephone jack. Avoid placing the telephone cable next to a power wire to prevent interference. Fasten the cable onto surfaces with cable staples every foot along the route.

    • 5). Cut the cable once it reaches the first telephone jack, but allow about 6 inches of extra wire. Remove 2 inches of cable covering from the end of the telephone cable, using diagonal pliers. Strip off 1/2 inch of nylon insulation from the tip of each exposed wire, using a wire stripper. Hook the green wire clockwise around the green terminal screw inside the RJ-14 telephone jack, and hook the red wire clockwise around the red terminal screw.

    • 6). Hold another telephone cable, and remove 2 inches of cable covering from the end of the telephone cable, using diagonal pliers. Strip off 1/2 inch of nylon insulation from the tip of each exposed wire, using a wire stripper. Hook the green wire clockwise around the green terminal screw on the first RJ-14 telephone jack, and hook the red wire clockwise around the red terminal screw on the same jack. Tighten the screws to secure each connection.

    • 7). Run the telephone cable from the first telephone jack to the second telephone jack, and cut the cable after allowing an extra 6 inches. Remove 2 inches of outer covering from the cable. Strip off 1/2 inch of insulation from the tip of each exposed wire on both ends of the cable. Hook each wire to its corresponding terminal screw (red to red, green to green) on the jack, and tighten the screws firmly.

    • 8). Run the telephone cable from the last telephone jack that your wired to the next telephone jack that you will wire. Remove 2 inches of outer covering from both ends of the cable to expose the inner wires. Strip off 1/2 inch of insulation from the tip of each exposed wire on both ends of the cable. Loosen the terminal screws on both jacks at each end of the cable, hook each wire to its corresponding terminal screw (red to red, green to green) on each jack, and tighten the screws to secure all connections.

    • 9). Perform the procedures mentioned in Step 8 for each additional telephone that you will connect to the chain of telephone jacks that are wired one after the other. Plug the short wire inside the NID into its jack once you have completed wiring the telephone jacks. Plug a telephone into each jack one at a time, and place a call to test the line.
