How to Pull Horse Trailers with the New Toyota Tundra

    • 1). Schedule an appointment with your mechanic to have a tow hitch installed on your Tundra. Tow hitches come in a variety of sizes designated by how much they can safely tow, although you should have at least a class IV hitch installed to safely haul your horse trailer. Make sure the hitch is bolted to the frame to keep it from coming loose while hauling.

    • 2). Measure your trailer hitch and purchase a slider and ball that are the proper size. Slider and balls come in a variety of sizes, so be sure you purchase one that will fit your trailer. You can purchase a slider and ball at your local automotive or farm and ranch supply store. Insert the slider into the hitch and lock it in place with the pin to keep it from coming loose as you drive.

    • 3). Hook your Tundra up to your trailer. Secure your ball to the hitch by locking the hitch down and plug your trailer lights into the socket in the bumper of your truck. Your Tundra is built with a full-size pickup frame and can tow a loaded four-horse trailer without difficulty. Turn on your turn signals and walk to the rear of your trailer to make sure all your lights are in working order.

    • 4). Fill the feed bin in the front of your trailer to keep your horse happy and occupied while driving down the road. Fit your horse with a halter and lead and load him into the trailer, tying him securely to keep him from turning around during transit. Close the trailer door and do a final inspection to make sure everything is working properly before heading out.

    • 5). Pull onto the road slowly, checking both ways before driving into traffic. Be sure to check your mirrors often to make sure your trailer is hauling well and all doors remain securely closed. Maintain a steady speed while on the road, changing lanes and making turns gradually to keep from upsetting your horse while in transit.
