Nikon D200 Settings for Basketball Shots

    Shutter Speed

    • Most of the action in a basketball game occurs underneath or near the rim. In order to freeze that action in a photograph, the photographer needs to use a shutter speed fast enough to stop motion. Typically a speed of 1/125th of a second or higher is fast enough to stop most basketball action. In order to accomplish this on the Nikon D200, the photographer must select one of two exposure modes--shutter priority or manual. In shutter priority mode, the photographer selects the desired shutter speed and the camera selects the corresponding aperture and ISO setting. In manual mode, the photographer selects the camera's shutter speed, aperture and ISO setting. To freeze the action of a basketball player, the photographer needs a speed fast enough to stop the action without compromising how much light the camera absorbs.

    ISO

    • ISO stands for International Organization for Standardization. In photography, ISO numbers reflect the sensitivity of a particular film or digital camera sensor to light. The higher the ISO the more light the film or sensor absorbs. The ISO settings on the Nikon D200 range from ISO 100 to ISO 3,200. When photographing a basketball game, most stadiums do not allow the use of flash photography. This can blind the players. This means the photographer must use the existing stadium lighting to expose the image. This requires the use of a high ISO setting in order to absorb as much light as possible. On the D200, setting the camera's ISO to 800 or 1,000 should give the photographer ample flexibility to get good images. If the stadium has really dim lighting, increasing the ISO even higher can help. But beware, increased ISO settings result in increased noise, or loss of sharpness and detail in an image.

    Aperture

    • The aperture makes up the third part of the triangle that determines exposure. The aperture relates to the size of the opening of the lens in use. On the Nikon D200, the photographer selects the aperture one of two ways--in aperture priority mode or in manual mode. When photographing a basketball game it is best to use the camera in manual mode, not aperture-priority mode. Aperture priority mode allows the camera to select the shutter speed, which in this case the photographer wants to control in order to select an appropriate speed to freeze the action. In manual mode, the photographer should select the widest aperture available with the lens in use. For example, if the photographer uses a 200-mm f/2.8 lens then he should select f/2.8 as the aperture setting. This allows the camera to absorb as much light as possible. If the photographer uses a 400-mm f/4.0 lens then he should select f/4.0 as the aperture setting.
