Holiday Ideas for 2012

A new year means lots of exciting new plans - one of the more exciting plans you'll make early on is where to go on holiday! As always, the world is your oyster, but for purposes of inspiration I thought I'd cover some places relevant to the year 2012.
Something to cover early is the '2012 phenomenon' - there are lots of prophecies, books and movies that say the world will end in 2012.
One such story states that the Mesoamerican calendar, used by the Mayan's, comes to an end in 2012 - along with it there are stories that might indicate that they thought the world would end in 2012.
This is the perfect opportunity therefore to travel to Mexico and explore Mayan ruins, such as Chichen Itza.
Explore and learn more about this culture and decide for yourself what they believed may happen in 2012.
Sticking with the theme of disaster, as global warming threatens to raise global sea levels, the Maldives are looking increasingly threatened with extinction.
At the highest point, the island chains rises just 2.
4 metres above sea level, so with a minimal rise in sea levels they would seen be submerged - go see them while you still can.
The final 2012 disaster location I'll mention is New York City.
Whenever Hollywood stages a disaster on the big screen, New York seems to be at the epicentre.
In the movie 2012, New York's public library kept survivors warm and alive, while the stunning skyline recognisable worldwide was used for many of the wide shots of destruction.
Certainly a great destination to head, to relive cinematic moments.
On a more positive theme, London England has much going on in 2012 - not only are the 2012 Olympics come to London but also the city will celebrate Queen's Diamond Jubilee in February which will give visitors the perfect opportunity to see British national pride spill out onto the streets.
Elsewhere in Europe, Euro 2012 football will be hosted by Poland and Ukraine in June 2012.
Both fascinating countries packed with culture and wonderful cities to explore, worth heading to even if you don't want to watch a match.
2012 also marks the 100th Anniversary of the Titanic disaster where a ship sailing from England to New York City sunk in the Atlantic.
The Titanic museum in Ireland, where the ship was built, is a fascinating visit - as is much of Ireland which has many cities and landscapes worth a visit.
Of course, there any many things going on around the world in 2012 and wherever you plan to head you can save money by booking a self catered holiday villa.
