- 1). Wait until late winter to prune the Vitex agnus-castus.
- 2). Examine the Vitex agnus-castus for any broken, dead or diseased limbs. Cut these limbs off at the point where they sprout from the main stem using pruning shears.
- 3). Decide if you want the Vitex agnus-castus to grow into a tree rather than a shrub. If so, select the strongest, thickest branch growing from the ground and remove all other branches at the surface of the soil.
- 4). Look at the center of the Vitex agnus-castus plant, whether it is a shrub or a tree, and identify whether there is more than one main leader trunk in the center. If so, choose the one that is the largest or growing in the optimal direction. Cut the other leader trunk off with a hand saw at the location where is grows from the main trunk.
- 5). Stand back and look at the top edges of the plant to determine its natural shape. Identify any limbs or branches that are longer than this natural shape and prune them back until they blend in with the remainder of the plant.
