Toprol Side Effects

    Most Common Effects

    • In clinical studies with Toprol-XL, as detailed by eMedTV, the most common side effects were experienced in 10 to 16 percent of participants. These effects were slow heart rate, and dizziness and tiredness most likely related to the slow heartbeat.

    Other Side Effects

    • Side effects experienced by 1 to 5 percent of participants included depression, constipation or diarrhea, dry mouth, edema, gas, heartburn, low blood pressure, nausea, rash or itching, shortness of breath and wheezing. Many of these effects call for medical attention.

    Post-Study Effects

    • Additional side effects reported after Toprol-XL was made available to the general public include lightheadedness, insomnia, unusual dreams and vision problems, which also typically are temporary.

    Circulation Issues

    • Toprol-XL can reduce blood circulation in the hands and feet, which makes them feel cold, numb or tingling. Smoking can worsen this side effect.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Anyone experiencing very unlikely but serious side effects should contact a doctor. These include bluish discoloration of fingers and toes, continued nausea, decreased sexual ability, easy bruising or bleeding, hair loss, increased thirst, increased urination, jaundice, mood changes, persistent sore throat or fever, and sudden weight gain.
