- 1). Locate the valves behind your washing machine. (The knobs are usually red). Turn off the hot and cold water using these valves. Turn the washing machine on for a few seconds to release the pressure.
- 2). Unplug the washer. Unscrew the hoses from the wall spigots and washing machine using pliers. Loosen the drain hose with a screwdriver and twist it off.
- 3). Unplug the dryer and pull it out. Loosen the vent with a screwdriver.
- 4). Place an ad in the local paper or on an online classified board such as Craigslist. It should begin with: "Working Washer and Dryer in Good Condition for Sale." Mention the price, your phone number, and the best time to reach you if necessary. Emphasize that they must be prepared to remove the appliances themselves. However, move the appliances as close to your rear or front door as possible for everyone's convenience.
- 5). Ask a friend, relative, or neighbor to assist you. Make two loops of climbing webbing or rope to form a sling on both sides of the bottom of the appliance. Place one loop around your hips. The other loop will go around the waist of the individual that assists you. Pull the machine with your hips to your destination, giving your arms freedom for direction and leverage.
- 6). Contact your nearest Salvation Army or homeless shelter to see if they have use for your washer and dryer if they no longer work. They may know someone that can fix it. Reach out to local theater groups and ask if they can use the appliances for parts or stage furniture. Also, contact small repair shops. They may be able to reuse the parts.
