- The RM250 features a two-stroke single cylinder engine that produces total pistol displacement of 249 cubic centimeters. The transmission is a five-speed manual. As is common for powerful motorcycles with small engines, the RM250 produces more horsepower at higher revolutions per minute. Suzuki experimented with the engine to give it more midrange power.
- In 2001 Suzuki tried to achieve better engine performance by reducing the motorcycle's weight and improving the exhaust system. The frame and rear cradle tubing were completely redesigned, and the search for lightness was extended to the engine. A two-stage, two-piece power valve replaced a one-piece exhaust valve. New valves allowed for opening over wider rpm range.
- For the 2005 model, Suzuki redesigned the combustion chamber and reduced the squish area, which improved combustion efficiency and throttle response. The upper corners of the main exhaust ports were raised. These changes helped to improve power delivery at low-end and mid-end ranges.
