- 1). Gather an assortment of fabric scraps to create the tags. Consider solid shades that will coordinate with various wrapping paper styles.
- 2). Coat a manila shipping tag with spray adhesive, since liquid glue may seep through the fabric or cause the tag to warp. Press it onto the back of the fabric and use scissors to trim the excess from around the tag. For a more homespun look, use a piece of double-stick tape to tack the fabric down and sew around the edges with a machine or needle. Thread and trim the edges.
- 3). Use a hole punch to poke through the fabric at the top of the tag, using the tag's original hole as the guide. Thread a piece of coordinating ribbon through to hang the tag from the gift box, bag or basket.
- 4). Add the "To" and "From" directly onto the fabric by writing it with a solvent ink pen that won't bleed. You also can use letter stamps and solvent ink pads to add the message. If you'd rather use an ordinary pen or if the fabric is too dark, write on a small piece of coordinating card tock and affix it to the fabric with double-stick tape (see Resources below).
- 5). Create smaller gift tags by trimming fabric into a circle, adding decorative stitching with embroidery thread and adhering it to the center of a metal-rimmed tag. Hang it with raffia or jute for a rustic look.
