Can Orange Peels Go in the Garbage Disposal?

Correct Size

Cut up orange peels into small pieces that are generally 1 or 2 inches in size. This will allow the garbage disposal to grind up the peels easily and will help prevent the orange peels from clogging the disposal fly wheel. Leaving the orange peels in larger sections can make it harder for the disposal to work properly.

Cleaning

Fill an ice cube tray with distilled vinegar and freeze until the cubes are solid. Place the vinegar cubes in the garbage disposal. Add pieces of orange peel and run cold water into the disposal. Run the garbage disposal until the vinegar cubes and orange peels have been thoroughly ground. This can help clean the garbage disposal and remove excess debris from the flywheel.

Deodorizing

Orange peels placed into a garbage disposal and ground up with cold water can help release the citrus oil in the peels, helping remove bad odors from the garbage disposal. This can be done on a daily basis to help keep the garbage disposal from smelling bad after other items or food products are placed into the disposal.

Off Season

Orange peels can still be used to help clean and deodorize a garbage disposal even if oranges are not in season and are more difficult to obtain. Simply freeze some cut pieces of orange peel when oranges are plentiful. Place the frozen orange peels in the garbage disposal with some running water to clean and deodorize the flywheel as described previously.
