Things You'll Need
Instructions
1Run warm water over your cast iron object. Lightly scrub the surface with a nylon scrub brush and water only to remove any dirt, debris or coatings on the new item. Dry with a clean towel.
2
Pre-heat your oven to 400 degrees F. Rub vegetable shortening all over the inside of your cast iron cookware.
3
Lay your cast iron, face down, on a baking sheet. Place the baking sheet in the oven and allow your cast iron to cure for one hour.
4
Remove your cast iron and the baking sheet from the oven. Wipe any excess shortening off from the inside of the cookware using paper towels. Set your cookware on a cooling rack and leave it there until it's completely cool.
5
Repeat all steps if your cast iron is brand new. Curing your items twice provides your cast iron with the best surface with which to start cooking and baking.
