How to Take Care of Weeping Cherry Trees

    • 1). Provide 2 to 3 gallons of water for a weeping cherry tree during times of severe drought if the tree is 2 years old or younger. Pour the water on the soil around the tree, trying to keep the water from pooling up against the bark of the tree. Standing water in contact with the bark of the tree can subject the tree to bark rot or mildew problems. Water at least three times a week during severe drought and once a week if the location provides weekly rainfall as an assist.

    • 2). Watch the tree for signs of nutrient deficiency. If the tree's root system is having difficulty obtaining ample nutrients from the soil, the limbs and branches will begin to sag and the leaves will begin turning lighter in color than normal. Apply 1/2 lb. to 1 lb. of fertilizer directly to the soil around the tree if symptoms occur, and water the fertilizer down into the ground. Avoid applying fertilizer to the tree directly; mix it into the soil only.

    • 3). Apply any name-brand deer repellent on top of the tree if it is still young enough for deer to chew on its foliage. Apply sparingly throughout each year until the tree has grown high enough that the foliage is out of reach of deer.
