The Acura TL was introduced in 1996, with a complete model redesign in 1999. The 2003 car came in four trim packages, the 3.2 TL, Type S, the 3.2 TL with navigation system and the Type S with navigation system. All versions were four-door sedans, and all came with a 3.2-liter engine.
- All 2003 versions of the Acura TL came with a standard 3.2-liter V6 engine that produced 225 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 216 ft.-lbs. of torque at 4,700 rpm, according to MSN Autos. The car was only offered with a five-speed automatic overdrive transmission. It had a 17.1-gallon fuel tank and an EPA estimated fuel efficiency of 17 miles per gallon city and 27 miles per gallon highway, according to Edmunds.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the car a "good" rating for overall, chest, head and neck, left leg, restraint and structural safety performance, and an "acceptable" for right leg performance.

The car was 192.9 inches long, 70.3 inches wide and 56.1 inches high and had a wheelbase of 108.1 inches. The car could seat five people, had a cargo capacity of 14 cubic feet and a curb weight of 3,492 pounds, according to Edmunds.
