Removing Algae
1Drain the birdbath of any water.
2
Make a paste by mixing baking soda and water in a bowl.
3
Use a crumpled up plastic bag and scrub the paste into the algae stained areas.
4
Continue to scrub, adding more paste as needed until all of the algae is gone.
5
Rinse the birdbath with clean water. Make sure there are no traces of baking soda left before filling it up again with clean water.
Ideas for Preventing Algae Growth in Your Birdbath
1Drop a few pennies in the water and leave them there. The copper will inhibit algae growth.
2
Add a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to the water to keep algae at bay. It won't harm the birds, and it keeps the birdbath much cleaner.
3
Install a small fountain in the birdbath. Algae grows in stagnant water with low oxygen. By adding a fountain, it keeps the water moving and algae won't be able to survive in it.
