The New York State Department of Labor provides unemployment benefits for workers who lose their jobs. This temporary assistance is to help residents financially while they look for another job. Full-time and part-time workers may be eligible for unemployment insurance benefits. If you lose your full-time job and begin working part-time while receiving unemployment assistance, you will still be able to collect unemployment assistance, but you will receive partial benefits. - If you are employed part-time and lose your job, you may be eligible for unemployment benefits. New York state unemployment insurance provides partial benefits to part-time workers who work fewer than four days a week and earn less than $405. For each day that you work, your weekly benefit amount will be reduced by one-quarter, even when you work for part of a day. If your weekly benefit amount is determined to be $100 and you work for one day, your benefit amount could possibly be reduced to $75 for that week. If you work two days, your weekly benefit amount could be reduced to $50. Receiving partial benefits means that you may collect benefits for an extended length of time but not beyond the ending of your benefit year and you cannot receive an amount greater than your maximum benefit allowance. If you earn more than $405 in any given week, you will not be eligible to receive unemployment benefits for that week.
- You have to be available for work and actively seeking work as a condition of receiving unemployment insurance benefits in New York state. If you come across a part-time employment opportunity, you can still collect unemployment benefits but you must report your earnings and not work more days--or earn more money--than the weekly limits for receiving partial benefits. Full-time and part-time workers collecting unemployment benefits must report employment to the New York State Department of Labor or they may risk criminal penalties for committing fraud.
- Once you become unemployed, you should file a claim with the New York State Department of Labor as soon as possible. You can apply by going to its website and using the Benefits Online page or by calling its telephone claims center. You will need to have the information required to complete your unemployment benefits application, such as your Social Security number, contact information and your most recent employer's contact information. If you are applying online, you can choose to have your benefits directly deposited into your bank account by providing your checking account and routing numbers.
