The Effects of DUI on a Driving Record

    • Drunken driving is everyone's problem.report drunk drivers sign (closeup) image by Paul Marcus from Fotolia.com

Drunken-driving laws vary from state to state, but if you are caught driving above the legal limit for alcohol in your state, you will be charged with driving under the influence (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI). If you are convicted, it will remain on your driving record for the length of time required by your state. These are public records and could affect the outcome of a decision made by any entity that does a background check.

    Insurance

The most obvious effect of a DUI conviction is on your auto insurance. You will face higher premiums and possible cancellation of your car insurance, as you are now considered a high risk. Some states require SR22 insurance, which is a certificate from your insurance company that you have liability insurance. If your insurance is canceled for any reason, the insurance company must notify the state. Insurance rates for life insurance and individual health insurance may also be affected. If you are applying for new coverage, you may be denied.

    Company Cars

If you have to drive a company-owned vehicle, such as a fleet car, delivery truck, van that picks employees up at public transportation hubs, police car, firetruck or school bus, you may have a problem. Your company's auto insurance covers you in its car. If your rates will go up because of your DUI, you can be sure you won't be driving that car for long. If driving a company vehicle is a requirement of your job, this could be grounds for firing you. If you must drive a company car for a job you are applying for, you may not get it.

    Federal Regulations

If you are a pilot and have a DUI conviction for a car, you are required to notify the Federal Aviation Authority. If you don't notify it within the prescribed time, you can have your certifications and authorizations suspended or revoked, and you won't be able to fly. This could result in a loss of your job. This applies not only to commercial airlines, but to crop dusters, medical helicopters and air freight pilots. Some trucking companies won't hire you if you have a DUI, others won't hire you if you have a DUI within the last five years. You will have a problem with a job as a driver for package delivery services.
