- 1). Select a large container for your cannas. A five-gallon bucket works well if you have the room.
- 2). Add a layer of pebbles or rocks to the bottom of the pot to create drainage. Be sure that your container has drainage holes. Fill with equal parts of all-purpose potting soil and compost. Mix thoroughly.
- 3). Plant one canna rhizome in each pot to a depth of 4 to 6 inches. Compress the soil to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly.
- 4). Place the canna in a sunny window or in front of a glass door that receives at least six hours of sunlight a day.
- 5). Water weekly during the spring and summer with water-soluble fertilizer diluted to ¼ strength. Discontinue fertilizer when growth ceases in the fall to allow the plant to rest.
- 6). Keep soil evenly moist. Cannas love moist soil, but will suffer if they do not have proper drainage.
