How to Visit the Badlands

    • 1). Know all that you can discover and explore in this unique area. From camping and hiking to bird watching and auto-touring, visitors can enjoy countless activities. Check the NPs website for special events.

    • 2). Make use of the visitor's center for all park information. The park's main visitor center, the Ben Reifel Visitor Center, is open daily all year (except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day). During the summer months, ranger-led programs are offered throughout the day. This recently rehabilitated visitor center contains exhibits featuring geology, paleontology, park wildlife and resource management. The 20-minute park movie, Land of Stone and Light, is shown throughout the day. Stop at the visitor center for information, restrooms, exhibits and the park’s movie. In the South Unit of the Badlands, the White River Visitor Center is open during the summer months and offers information, restrooms and cultural exhibits.

    • 3). Should you want to camp, the Cedar Pass Campground has 96 level sites with scenic views of the badlands formations. Located near the Ben Reifel Visitor Center, the campground is operated on a first-come, first-served basis and rarely fills to capacity. Cold running water, flush toilets and covered picnic tables are available at this site. Sage Creek Campground is open year round and is located on the west side of the park's North Unit, near the Badlands Wilderness Area. Bison frequently roam through this campground area.

    • 4). Bring your camera. There's nothing like the Badlands anywhere else in the world--the breathtaking views you can see driving, hiking or camping around the park don't compare to anything else. Many visitors say that the terrain looks like the surface of the moon.
