- 1). Brush the fur. Remove any tangles and move the fur so that the individual hairs in the fur are pointing in the some direction.
- 2). Spread out the fur on a smooth, flat surface.
- 3). Stand the fur on end with a comb as much as possible, combing up from the base of the fur (the skin) to the tip as if you were teasing it. This will make it easier to cut evenly. If necessary, wet the comb slightly to help this process.
- 4). Trim the fur with scissors. Take off about half as much length as you ultimately want to trim using this method. This will clear away enough of the bulk of the fur to make it possible to trim it with the machine. Try to make the lengths as even as you can, keeping the blades of the scissors parallel with the bottom of the fur. It's OK if you can't get it precisely even, since this is what the beard trimmer will fix.
- 5). Repeat steps 1 and 2, brushing out the clippings as you do so to clear the way for the beard trimmer.
- 6). Set the beard trimmer to its longest setting so you'll be able to trim it shorter, later, if you need to.
