How to Level & Tamp a Stone Shed Foundation

    • 1). Fill the foundation with four inches of stone to create a two-inch stone layer.

    • 2). Use a rake to shift the stone around the foundation base until it's even.

    • 3). Run a vibratory plate compactor over the stone, tamping the four-inch layer of stone down to two inches.

    • 4). Add additional four-inch layers until you build up the stone layer to the height desired, evening the stone with the rake and then tamping down each layer with the plate compactor after pouring in the stone.

    • 5). Level out the last stone layer by pulling a wooden screed across the stones before tamping. Place the screed at one end of the foundation and drag it across the top of the stones using a sawing motion to level out any high points, and fill any voids in the stone layer. Tamp the stone after leveling with the compactor, then drag the screed across the compressed layer a second time to ensure that it's level.
