Civic Associations

    Ethnic Associations

    • Civic associations targeted toward a specific ethnic group typically work on goals with both the community and ethnic groups being represented. The Cherry Hill African-American Civic Association serves the Cherry Hill, New Jersey, community through initiatives and efforts geared towards improving the life, ways and means of African Americans. The Latino Civic Association of Tompkins County, based out of Ithaca, New York, is a service based group of Latinos from the Ithaca and surrounding areas. The group works towards promoting community efforts which help better living conditions for Latinos.

    Historical Clubs

    • Civic associations with a goal of preserving community history work on maintaining the heritage of the area. The Druid Hills Civic Association, located in Decatur, Georgia, places focus on historic preservation throughout Dekalb County and the City of Atlanta. One of the goals of the group is to maintain a specific look and feel for buildings and areas, to reflect the historical significance associated with the area.

    Parent-Teachers' Associations (PTA)

    • Parent-Teach Associations, also referred to as PTA's, work in communities throughout the country. These groups combine parents, community minded members and representatives of the school or school district. The groups work towards common goals to better the educational endeavors of the school. Parents involved in a PTA volunteer time and services to help raise money for schools, assist with educational and fundraising events and communicate with administrators and school officials on setting and changing school policy and procedure.

    Senior Citizens Associations

    • Civic minded senior citizens can belong to associations and groups where membership is determined based on age. Most senior citizen civic groups allow any member of the community to join, provided they meet the minimum age requirement for membership. The Vestavia Hills Senior Citizens Association, located in Vestavia Hills, Alabama, works on improving the quality of community life for seniors. Some of the routine initiatives of the group include working with policy makers at the local government level to increase senior citizen benefits and assisting seniors with medical, transportation and housing needs.

Community Development and Economic Development Associations

    • Community development and economic development associations, found throughout various state and local governments across the country, provide a coordinated effort in terms of improving the community as a whole. This type of civic association works on macro level goals and programs. While targeted civic associations, such as those working for senior citizens or children, target specific issues, the broader based community groups look at and assess the community as a whole. Some of the work performed by community or economic development groups deal with job creation and retention, infrastructure development and taxation issues.
