Eric Bischoff Interview Page 4/4

Eric Cohen: I have never quite understood the power sharing arrangement you had with Vince Russo during your second tenure in WCW. In particular, I have always wondered about the night that David Arquette won the title. Vince Russo has always taken credit for that decision yet it was you that was pinned in the match where David won the title. Can you explain to me what happened that night?
Eric Bischoff: It really wasn’t so much power sharing.

After I had left WCW in September 1999 and Russo had come in shortly after I left by convincing everyone that he was the creative savior of the company.

He was the creative savior that turned WWE around, which subsequently everyone figured out was pretty much of a crock. They experimented with Russo and once I think they saw through him and realized that there was really nothing under the hood creatively speaking, he was a little bit of a fraud, they were in a tough spot. So tough that in fact that despite the situation I had been in with them in September they called me and asked if I would come back.

I made it clear that I didn’t want to come back in the same type of capacity I had been with them before because quite frankly, as a corporate structure, and I think that history kind of proves this out if you do any kind of reading or research into the Time Warner- AOL fiasco, which is probably one of the biggest up until recently, maybe last week, one of the biggest corporate disasters in the United States.

The company, internally was so broken, that I really didn’t want to be a part of the corporate structure anymore.

What I did agree to was to come in, and not share power, but oversee the creative of WCW. Early on in that process, when Russo wanted to do the creative with David Arquette, it was very early on in the relationship, the new relationship I had with him, and I didn’t really like the idea, I didn’t hate it, I understood why he wanted to do it. It was so early on in the process that it was one that I kind of let slide quite honestly. I didn’t want to come in early on in the relationship, because it was my intention to make it work, and I didn’t want to come in and rain on his creative parade right off the bat.

To be honest, I wasn’t so dead set against it that I felt like I had to draw a line in the sand on that particular issue. Sometimes, you have to pick the hill that you want to fight on. And I wasn’t so sure that I was 100% right. So I opted not to fight the battle and to see how it went. At that point, we didn’t have a lot to lose and the press would not have hurt us and I went along with it.

Eric Cohen: Is there anything else you would like to let my readers know?

Eric Bischoff: I hope that your readers check us out and sample the product. Like I said earlier, one of the things that we wanted to do was create a great combination of a solid reality format and a unique wrestling product. We’ve got great celebrities and we’ve got a good friend of ours, Bubba the Love Sponge, whose on Sirius radio each day and works with Howard Stern, is our play-by-play guy. It is very entertaining. It’s a wrestling show that non-wrestling fans can enjoy as well as wrestling fans.

Check us out. Go onto Hulk Hogan.com and let us know what you think. We are interested in your reader’s input. We want to hear from them how they like the show or what types of changes they would like to see made and we want to work with your readers to produce the best reality/wrestling show we can.
