The flowers are blooming and the sweet scent of fresh flowers is in the air. It is the spring season once again. You cannot wait to jump on your Harley and ride down the open road listening to the humming sound of your v-twin exhausts. If you stored your bike properly for winter, then your bike has been safe and sound and is now ready for new adventures.
However, before you hop onto your bike, there are some steps you need to follow to ensure your bike is safe enough to ride. These steps are as follows;
1.Check the battery
2.Change the oil
3.Refill the gas tank
4.Grease the engine
5.Inspect the bike
6.Clean it
1.Check the battery "" If I had a nickel for every time a bike wouldn"t go on after wintertime due to a dead battery, I would be rich! Checking of the battery is very essential as many batteries die due to the extreme cold weather of the winter. To do this, connect the battery to a trickle charger. Check the fluid levels and charge it slowly. If the battery doesn"t respond, you may just have to buy a new battery.
2.Change the oil "" after removing the bike out of storage, the oil is the second important step. If you changed the oil before storing it, then you may not have to change it again. However, it is important to check it and change the oil if necessary. You must also check the oil filter and change it if necessary.
3.Refill the gas tank "" it is important for you to refill the gas tank with fresh gas before setting off on that ride. However, it is advisable for you to drain the gas tank so as to check the tank for any rust that could be creeping in. You can also check your filters and carburetors. If you find that your carburetors are sticking, you then have to clean them. You can do this by disassembling them and cleaning them by using car cleaner. It is always better to be safe than sorry.
4.Grease the engine "" due to the fact that your engine has been sitting idly for the last few months, you will definitely have to grease up the engine. Remove the spark plugs and put in some drops of oil into the engine. With the spark plugs off, you can check the gaps for any signs of wear and then decide whether to replace them or not.
5.Inspection "" each bike has its specific way of maintenance that must be performed. Therefore refer to your motorcycles manual which will explain in full detail the maintenance that needs to be done.
6.Clean it "" having been sitting in the garage, basement or wherever your bike had been hibernating, it definitely has collected some dust. It therefore goes without saying that you need to give your bike a thorough cleaning. You can then wax your bike in preparation for the riding season.
Having followed all these steps, you and your bike are definitely ready for spring. You will be able to ride your bike without having to worry about the battery dying on you, the engine giving up or the dirt on your bike chasing away the girl you have been eyeing. In conclusion, have a great spring with your bike looking as good as new.
