How to Cite a Magazine in MLA Style for Footnotes

Instructions

Citation

1

Cite a printed magazine that is published weekly or bimonthly by stating the author's last name, followed by the first name. Include the article title in quotation marks and the magazine title in italics. List the date followed by a colon, then include the page numbers. Cite the medium "print" last. As an example, if you wish to cite the article "Challenges to California Farmers" written by Joe Farmer appearing on pages 28 to 34 in the June 5, 2010, magazine of Farmers, the article would be cited as follows: Farmer, Joe. "Challenges to California Farmers." Farmers (italicized) 5 June 2010: 28-34. Print.
2

Cite a magazine that is published monthly or every two months in the same format as in the first step except list the month or the months and the year. Assuming the article in the first example is published monthly, the article would be cited as follows: Farmer, Joe. "Challenges to California Farmers." Farmers (italicized) June 2010: 28-34. Print.
3

Cite a magazine from an online database in the same manner as in the first step for a printed magazine except remove the medium "print." Complete the citation with the database title in italics, the medium "web" and the access day, month and year. Assume the article referenced was retrieved from the Lexis Nexis Academic database on August 20, 2010. The article will be cited as follows: Farmer, Joe. "Challenges to California Farmers." Farmers (italicized) 5 June 2010: 28-34. Lexis Nexis Academic (italicized). Web. 20 Aug. 2010.
4

Cite a magazine that was printed and included in a database on CD-ROM or DVD ROM by following the same manner as seen in step 1. Exclude the medium "print" after the page number and state CD-ROM or DVD-ROM. Include the database in italics and cite the vendor. The publication date of the database should be listed last. Assume the same detail in step 1 and that the data was later retrieved from the Cropview database on CD-ROM published Sept. 15, 2010, by Farmer Technologies. The resource would be cited as follows: Farmer, Joe. "Challenges to California Farmers." Farmers (italicized) June 2010: 28-34. CD-ROM. Cropview (italicized). Farmer Technologies. Sep. 2010.
