- 1). Turn off the trimmer and lay it on a flat surface, such as a driveway, work bench or porch, with the trimmer head facing up. Unplug the trimmer, if it's electric, or pull the sparkplug wire off the sparkplug if it's gas.
- 2). Hold the trimmer head steady with one hand and unscrew the trimmer head cover with the other. Trimmers generally rotate clockwise, so turn the cover counterclockwise. If the head won't unscrew, look for for a locking tab and depress the tab to unscrew the cover.
- 3). Remove the empty spool from the trimmer. If you're replacing the old spool with a pre-wound spool, set the new spool in place and insert 6 to 8 inches of line through the hole in the housing.
- 4). Thread an inch of the replacement line for a single-strand trimmer through the loop in the housing. If your trimmer is a double-strand model, feed about 15 feet through the loop.
- 5). Search for the arrow on the spool indicating the direction in which to wind the line. Wind the line around the spool in straight, even wraps until the spool is about 3/4 full. If the string trimmer is a double-strand trimmer, wind both the left and right lines in the same direction.
- 6). Pull about 6 inches of line out of each eyelet in the housing. Slip the spool back into the housing, fitting the tabs on the housing to the spool. Screw the cover back onto the spool.
