How to Become a DUI School Instructor

    • 1). Research your state's regulations about the training required to become a DUI school instructor to determine whether this is the career for you.

    • 2). Obtain your college degree, if you haven't already done so. Most states, such as Florida, for instance, require DUI school or program instructors to have a bachelor's degree in human services, criminal justice or traffic safety.

    • 3). Gain several years' experience in the field of criminal justice, human services or substance abuse counseling.

    • 4). Complete the necessary training, as mandated by your state. This usually takes the form of a multiday course, usually four days. In Utah, the fee for this course in $250. This fee varies from state to state, so check with your local department of mental health to determine the fees for the course in your area.

    • 5). Take and pass the exam required for certification. Read and sign the relevant administrative paperwork and agree to deliver the course as outlined in the certification process.

    • 6). Re-certify as required by your state's licensing regulations. Most states will require you to attend some form of re-certification training every few years.
