How to Make a Harajuku Costume

    • 1). Search for Harajuku fashion on the Internet. Study the various Harajuku styles, which include Cosplay, Wamono, Gothic Lolita, Decora and Kawaii. While the Wamono style combines traditional Japanese dress with modern fashion, such as a kimono complemented with stiletto shoes, the Decora style is characterized by a profusion of accessories. Find the style that appeals to you and leverage it as the starting point to improvise your own style.

    • 2). Design your Harajuku costume on paper by mixing and matching fashions. Aim to create clashing elements in style, color and fabric. Avoid creating a look that emulates any one fashion to the neglect of other fashions. Pair a ruffled skirt with combat boots, or a sleek black jacket with a pink tutu.

    • 3). Add layers to your design. Seek to make each new layer reflect a different fashion. Put a silk jacket over a leather vest. Wear brightly colored leggings underneath a pleated schoolgirl skirt. Think of your own Harajuku costume as a wild collage of disparate elements that are stacked one on top of the other.

    • 4). Visit a thrift shop to sift through different eras of fashion. Find clothes that no one else wears anymore but that appeal to your own taste. Improvise on your Harajuku costume design while shopping. Assemble your costume as if it is constantly evolving.

    • 5). Adorn your Harajuku costume with a legion of accessories, including hair clips and barrettes, belts, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, anklets, purses and handbags. Use brightly colored accessories that will make you stand out in a crowd. Wear jewelry that rustles and clangs. If you are emulating the Decora style, embellish your costume with scores of accessories.

    • 6). Add a dramatic hairstyle and makeup. Apply non-permanent dye, or wear a wig to change the color of your hair. If you are following the Kawaii subculture style, wear your hair in high pigtails. Wear brightly colored eye shadows and lipsticks. Line your eyes with bold, theatrical strokes.
