Concrete Yard Decorations

    Variety

    • Concrete is made into a multitude of outdoor decor items including birdbaths, fountains, pillars and sculpture. It is also used to make sturdy tables and benches that last much longer than conventional patio furniture. It can be painted or stained and may have natural textural variation depending upon the type of concrete used.

    Low Maintenance

    • Concrete can be sealed to prevent weathering, and resealing only needs to be done about every four years. Most homeowners prefer to leave the concrete unsealed, as the effects of moisture increase the texture and porosity of the concrete, allowing moss and algae to grow. This, along with the gentle erosion of hard edges, is what gives concrete its natural charm.

    Cautions

    • Concrete fountains and birdbaths must be emptied during the winter, as the water will expand as it freezes and shatter the bowl. Unsealed concrete is porous and will absorb stains from spills or plant matter. Concrete is prone to chipping and cracking if impacted by a hard, heavy object, so your garden sculpture may suffer damage during hurricanes or other powerful storms.
