Summary
Kidney stones, once thought of as only an adult health problem, have become a pediatric epidemic. The risks and costs involved in treating kidney stones are extensive. The concept of medical expulsive therapy as an alternative to surgery and anesthesia in pediatrics deserves further investigation. The safety profile of any medication is critical, especially in the pediatric population. Treatment deemed safe for adults should not automatically be assumed safe for children.
