- 1). Purchase a pen big enough to host the Chinese catfish you plan to breed. Place it within or near flowing water. Make sure the water temperature is appropriate. Chinese catfish are warm-water and freshwater species, but can survive in various conditions.
- 2). Measure the ratio of females to males evenly. Due to the particular way Chinese catfish breed, it's important to have as much of an even ratio as possible. This will also depend on the number of fish you hope to have.
- 3). Provide smaller fish, crustaceans, or insects as food for your Chinese catfish. The overall amount will depend on the size and breeding capacity in the pen.
- 4). Allow room for migration. Some Chinese catfish can reach up to 10 feet in length, which means a bigger area must be provided. Raising pens should be at least 10 feet in width and 20 feet in length. Since females can easily lay 1,000 thousand eggs at a time, this will be crucial to your success in farming Chinese catfish.
- 5). Remove developed adolescent Chinese catfish from the raising pen and place them in the holding area. They can stay there for awhile, but it must be comfortable while they continue to grow.
