Silamide Thread
Definition:
Needle and thread are two basics required when a jewelry maker makes seed bead or bead woven jewelry. There are all kinds of options when it comes to threads for bead weaving, and one of those that has become pretty popular is Silamide. When it first came out, you could only purchase this thread in a few colors, but now, wow, there are all kinds of colors available in Silamide. You can purchase Silamide at most local bead stores as well as online bead vendors.
One reason for its popularity is that it comes waxed, so you do not need to use beeswax or similar products to wax the thread before using, which is normally a requirement when weaving beads together. The waxing helps keep the thread from snagging and allows for a more smooth weaving experience in general. Silamide is actually two threads (referred to as 2-ply) that are twisted together, and it is made of nylon. You can buy it in large spools that look similar to sewing thread. These spools are larger, though, and usually have about 900 yards of thread on them. Along with basic colors such as black and white, you can find them in other colors like purple, pink, blue, green, and so on. If you are not ready to buy in large quantities and want more color options for a little less of an initial investment, then buying this thread wrapped on cards is a good option. There are still lots of colors you can pick from, and normally get about 40 yards of thread on each card.
