What Causes Insomnia in Women?

Insomnia is a very bad condition to suffer from because it results in tiredness, stress, anxiety, memory loss and an inability to concentrate, amongst other things.
This problem affects people of all genders and ages, but there are a few unique factors that can cause sleeplessness in women.
If you know what causes insomnia in women then you will be able to deal with the problem easily.
  • Stress: This is one of the biggest causes of sleeplessness and lack of sleep results in even more stress.
Women tend to suffer from a lot of stress because they generally have to balance work and life pressures.
Even if you cannot always make the cause of stress go away, you could change the way in which you react to it.
Practice meditation, yoga or Tai Chi in order to learn how to regulate your breathing.
Make time for hobbies that can keep your mind relaxed.
  • Lifestyle: If you have irregular sleeping habits then your body's circadian rhythm will get confused and you will be unable to sleep easily.
Likewise, if you consume too much caffeine or food late in the evening you will find it hard to sleep well.
Excess alcohol might put you to sleep easily but the quality of sleep will not be good and you will not feel refreshed when you wake up.
If you have kids then you should ensure that they have a strict bedtime because if they do not sleep on time then neither will you.
  • Environment: If your bedroom is not conducive to sleep then you will stay up long into the night.
Buy the right kind of mattresses, pillows and bed linen that make you comfortable.
Keep most of your electronic gadgets outside the room so that you are not tempted to use them.
  • Hormonal imbalances: Women approaching menopause find it very difficult to fall asleep or to sleep throughout the night.
A drop in estrogen levels causes reduced production of melatonin which is necessary for sleep.
Changes in estrogen levels also result in the body's inability to regulate cortisol and this causes the woman to feel stress.
Also, fluctuations in body temperature (hot flashes) can cause a menopausal woman to wake up even if she has managed to fall asleep.
Diet, exercise, vitamin supplements and in extreme cases, hormone replacement therapy, can be used to regulate hormone levels.
Now that you know what causes insomnia in women you can identify which factors apply to you and take measures accordingly.
