Canine Thyroid Disease Symptoms

    The Problem

    • The thyroid is part of a three gland system. The thyroid, the hypothalamus and the pituitary. Thyroid disease and thyroid problems occur when the glands begin to produce too little, hypothyroidism, or too much hormone, hyperthyroidism.

    Hypothyroidism

    • Hypothyroidism is more common than Hyperthyroidism and is usually caused by a tumor destroying either the thyroid or pituitary glands. Symptoms of hypothyroidism include lethargic behavior, weight gain, inability to stay warm, dry skin, shedding, hair loss, and in some rare cases, skin thickening and puffy eyes.

    Hyperthyroidism

    • Hyperthyroidism occurs when your dog's body produces too much hormone. Your dog's glands are overactive, causing your dog's metabolism to speed up. Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism include weight loss, increased appetite, accelerated heart rate, frequent urination, vomiting, diarrhea and shortness of breath.

    Treatment

    • Veterinary treatment for both Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism include testing to measure your dog's hormone levels, hormone therapy, replacing or diminishing hormones, and surgery to remove the diseased portions or tumors.

    Breeds Affected

    • Thyroid diseases are most common in large dogs between the ages of 4 and 10. Breeds with the highest rates of thyroid disease are Golden Retrievers, Great Danes, Beagles, Shetland Sheepdogs, American Cocker Spaniels, Labrador Retrievers, Rottweilers, Boxers, Doberman Pinschers, German Shepherds, Akitas, Old English Sheepdogs and Irish Setters.
