Nelson's sword of honour, 1798: The Corporation of London presented this honorary sword and the Freedom of the City to Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson in 1800. The sword is beautifully enamelled and decorated with diamonds. Nelson was recognised for 'his public services and the eminent advantages he has rendered his country'. His victories at the Battle of the Nile in 1798 and at Trafalgar in 1805 secured Britain's overseas trade routes - crucial to the livelihood of London merchants.
