How to Use Build-it-Yourself Wood Kits

    • 1). Purchase a Build-it-Yourself kit based on interest, and how much time and effort you are willing to invest in a project. Read the instructions thoroughly to understand the project and its requirements; for instance, you may need an extra set of hands for holding framework, etc.

Retailers such as Lowe's, Home Depot and Menards sell an array of DIY kits, and their customer service specialists should be able to answer questions about project requirements and materials. Check the kit for any additional required tools and hardware necessary for project completion.

    • 2). Open the kit and compare its contents to the materials/instruction sheet included in the kit to ensure all contents are present. Be sure to have additional required materials, such as a hammer, on hand before getting started. It is recommended to verify material measurements with a measuring tape prior to building.

    • 3). Follow instructions in chronological order, completely and thoroughly. Use materials and hardware as instructed to ensure safety and quality of the finished product.

    • 4). Test finished product, if applicable. (For instance, if the project is a cupboard, test to ensure hinges work and door opens properly.)
