- 1). Locate contests through a professional poetry society or organization. These groups regularly advertise competitions in their trade publications and on their websites. For example, check out the Poetry Society of America's "Crossroads" journal and web page (see Resources below).
- 2). Volunteer your services as a judge at a local library or school. Many of these organizations sponsor or participate in poetry contests each year. If there isn't one in your local area, plan one in conjunction with the organization. (See related eHow, "How to Organize a Writing Contest," for guidance).
- 3). Meet the competition's qualifications for this role. Depending on the contest, you either apply or volunteer as a judge. If you're one of many applicants, send the selection committee or event director your resume and samples of your work. As you establish yourself as a judge, poetry contest sponsors will seek you out for future events.
- 4). Apply the competition's specific rules to each entry. Guidelines vary with each contest. (For additional information, see eHow's "How to Judge a Poetry Contest.")
