- 1). Make the decision to quit smoking for good and pick the date you plan to quit. Mark the date on the calendar as a reminder of the promise you made to improve your health.
- 2). Tell your family and close friends about your intentions to quit smoking. Let them know your quit date and ask for their support. Don't forget to tell your co-workers. They spend the bulk of the weekdays with you so they will be an important support group and network.
- 3). Join a support group. Being able to talk to people you don't know may free you to express your feelings, which could be helpful.
- 4). Get out and get moving. Exercise can release stress and calm your nerves. Each time you think about smoking, take a walk. The urge will pass, and you will help to prevent weight gain associated with quitting smoking.
- 5). Practice deep breathing. Each time you breathe in imagine yourself inhaling fresh air instead of cigarette toxins. Deep breathing exercises help to reduce stress and the urge to smoke.
