Even though crime rates have dropped since 1990, carjacking remains a favorite among gun wielding gangsters.
Carjacking tends to take place after dark, between 11pm - 3am, frequently at unpopulated areas such as parking lots, stop signs, empty streets and even fast food joints.
Below are some tips on how to avoid becoming a victim of carjacking.
1.
Always lock your door and roll up your windows when leaving your car.
Even simple mundane activities such as leaving your car unattended to buy newspaper, or use a restroom can cause carjacking.
Carjackers can unlocked a door easily through an open window.
Never leave your car running to run inside to get something because your car may not be there when you come back.
2.
Many carjackers simply open the car door while the driver is stopped at red light or stop sign.
Always keep door locked and windows rolled up while driving.
3.
If you have to drive late at night, always have a driving buddy.
Single drivers, especially women are the main targets.
4.
Park in well lit areas and if you see someone suspicious lurking around, swallow your pride and ask for help from the security guard or store employee to escort you to the car.
5.
Don't forget your car is your weapon.
If the carjackers want the car and stand in front or at the back of the vehicle, don't be afraid to run over them.
Your safety comes first.
Finally, use common sense to prevent carjacking.
Always stay focus on the road and your surroundings.
If you feel threaten at any point, drive to a well lit area or a more populate place and call your friend to accompany you.
