How to Repair Wood Deck Flashing

    • 1). Inspect the flashing closely to determine what type of damage you need to repair. Small cracks in the flashing or voids around the bolts or nails holding the flashing in place can be filled in with silicone caulk, while larger voids and broken areas that have completely separated will need to utilize a patch kit for proper protection.

    • 2). Patch smaller areas with the silicone caulking. Cover small cracks (hairline fractures) with a layer of silicone caulking and push it down into the cracks as well as smooth it over with your finger. You can also re-cover all of the areas around nails and bolts mounting the flashing in place with silicone caulking.

    • 3). Cover larger cracks -- anything more than 1/16 inch -- or voids with a patch kit. Clean the surface of the flashing with the cleaner included in the patch kit, or swab it with some rubbing alcohol from your medicine cabinet. Apply the adhesive in the kit, then place the patch over the top of the adhesive. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for how much adhesive from the kit to apply.
