- 1). Unscrew the bolts holding the metal cover over the flywheel on the top of the Craftsman engine using the proper sockets. Pull the cover off.
- 2). Locate the plastic flap next to the flywheel that regulates the engine speed. This flap is called the governor. Unscrew the bolt that holds the end of the flap in the engine block with the proper socket.
- 3). Unhook the spring and small rod attached to the end of the governor from the throttle linkage eyelets. Bolt the metal cover back over the flywheel.
- 4). Inspect the muffler exhaust pipe mounted onto the side of the engine block with two bolts. If it's loose, tighten the bolts. A loose muffler will reduce the engine's power.
- 5). Add a high-octane fuel to the gas tank. The highest sold at normal gas stations is 92 octane.
- 6). Unscrew the plastic wingnut holding the air filter cover. Pull the cover off and replace the air filter. A dirty air filter will drastically lower the power and rpms. Screw the air filter cover back in place.
