Haiti

• After the devastating 2010 earthquake, Haiti's power infrastructure was completely lost. To reconstruct it, humanitarian aid agencies --- working alongside public and private companies --- have utilized solar power, the world's most plentiful alternative energy resource. Wind power has also played an important role in the rebuilding of Haiti. Independent of reconstruction efforts, there is an ongoing effort in Haiti to establish a biofuels industry, using sugar-based products and the seeds of oil-producing trees.
  
  

The Dominican Republic

• Demonstrating its commitment to alternative energy solutions, the Dominican Republic has passed renewable energy laws --- one of which allows ethanol as an automotive fuel. By producing ethanol, this Caribbean country is diversifying energy supplies, improving energy security and promoting economic growth for the region. Meanwhile, scientists and scholars in the Dominican Republic are developing wind and wave technology for both electric power and beach erosion control.
  
  

Cuba

• Solar power, wind technology and biofuels are being developed in Cuba and are widely used in both public facilities and private homes. Solar energy is particularly useful in the remote and mountainous areas to power schools, medical clinics and doctors; offices. There are wind farms in the country and further development of wind technology is ongoing. A wind map of Cuba shows dozens of areas identified with good potential. With its long history of sugar production and low labor costs, Cuba is well-suited for large-scale ethanol manufacture. Other biofuels and biomass products -- derived from coconuts and grasses, among other materials -- are being developed; Cuba has formed a joint venture with the United Kingdom to build biomass power plants next to sugar mills.
  
  

Jamaica

• A regional leader in wave technology and hydroelectricity, Jamaica harnesses the energy of the ocean as a power source. Wave technology has been introduced to generate electricity for some of Jamaica's coastal communities. The country is also engaged in other renewable energy solutions such as wind power, biofuels, biomass, geothermal energy and cogeneration-electricity production at sugar mills. In addition, there is a widespread and continuing effort in Jamaica to promote solar energy use.
