Yamaha Motor Corporation has been manufacturing recreational and street-legal motorcycles since the 1950s, giving the company nearly 50 years of experience when it released the 2001 version of the YZ125. The make has been quite successful over the years, and the 2001 version offered many of the same features found in later models. - A motocross bike built for speed, the Yamaha YZ125 make had already won multiple awards when the 2001 version was released, which retailed for $4,999. Many reviewers praised the bike for its handling abilities, its comfort and its style, and it received an average of five out of five stars by reviewers on rankings website PowerSports Network.
- Featuring a two-stroke, liquid-cooled engine with a reed valve, the 2001 YZ125 came equipped with a 1.42-inch Mikuni TMX carburetor. The engine has a displacement of 124 cc (7.57 cubic inches), a bore and stroke of 2.13 by 2.15 inches and a compression ratio of 10.84 to 1.00.
- The 2001 YZ125 came equipped with a chain final drive system and a wet, multi-plate clutch. The transmission was capable of six speeds. The bike also came with Dunlop tires, size 80/100-21 in front and 110/90-19 in the rear.
- The YZ125 came equipped with disc brakes in both front and back, 9.84 inches in diameter in the front and 9.45 inches in the rear. An inverted telescopic fork suspension system protected rider and bike in front, with 11.8 inches of travel. In back, the YZ125 came with an adjustable single shock suspension with 12.4 inches of travel.
- The 2001 YZ125 measures 84.2 inches in length, 32.6 in width and 51.9 in height. It has a wheelbase of 56.9 inches and a seat height of 39.0. The bike has a large ground clearance of 15.7 inches, allowing for greater maneuverability on trails and motocross courses. The bike's gas tank has a capacity of 2.1 gallons.
