- 1). Take the vehicle to a certified service shop to evacuate the Freon. Freon cannot be released into the atmosphere. If the air conditioning system does not have Freon in it, you can skip this step.
- 2). Locate the relay box near the fenderwell. Lift the cover off. Using the diagram on the underside of the cover, locate the fuel pump relay. Pull it out of its socket, using your fingers. Start the vehicle and let it run until it stalls to relieve the fuel pressure. If the vehicle won't start, crank it over several times to relieve the fuel pressure.
- 3). Disconnect the negative battery cable, using the appropriate wrench, ensuring that it does not touch metal. Follow the cable down to the ground. If the ground is on the engine, disconnect it from the engine. If it's on the body, you can leave it attached. Disconnect the positive battery cable from the battery, then follow it down to the starter. If the cable is attached to the engine via brackets, remove it from the brackets. Using the appropriate wrench, remove the cable from the starter. Put the nut back onto the stud on the starter so you don't lose it.
- 4). Loosen the clamps on the air duct, using the screwdriver, then remove the ducts. Remove the air cleaner assembly using the appropriate socket. Slide one of the drain pans under the radiator petcock. Loosen the petcock and allow the coolant to drain. Slide the other drain pan under the oil pan. Remove the drain bolt, using the appropriate socket and allow the oil to drain. Reinstall the drain bolt. Discard the fluids in an appropriate manner.
- 5). Remove the bolts holding the fan shroud onto the radiator. Push the fan shroud over the fan, toward the engine. Remove the lines on the air conditioning condenser, using the appropriate line wrench. Remove the oil cooler lines on the radiator, if equipped, using the appropriate line wrench. Unbolt the condenser and remove it from the vehicle. Loosen the clamps on the upper and lower radiator hoses, then pull the hoses off the radiator. Unbolt and remove the radiator. Remove the upper and lower radiator hose from the engine.
- 6). Loosen the bolts on the fan pulley, but do not remove them. Fit the appropriate socket onto the bolt in the center of the tensioner pulley. Rotate the pulley toward the center of the engine to loosen tension on the belt. Lift the belt off the pulleys, then allow the tensioner to gently rotate back into place. Remove the bolts from the fan and lift the fan and fan shroud out of the vehicle as an assembly. Insert the capscrew through the fan pulley and into the water pump flange to maintain alignment with the pulley and water pump.
- 7). Loosen the clamps on all the heater hoses, using the screwdriver. Remove the heater hoses from the engine. Label all wiring harness connectors and vacuum lines, using the tape and marker. Unplug all wiring harness connectors. Remove all vacuum lines, using the screwdriver. Remove the power brake vacuum check valve from the brake booster, using the appropriate socket, if equipped.
- 8). Remove the wiring on the distributor, using the appropriate wrench. Reinstall the nuts, so you don't lose them. Loosen the distributor hold-down bolt, using the appropriate wrench, then lift the distributor off the engine. Remove the throttle body assembly, using the screwdriver to remove the cables and the appropriate socket to unbolt the throttle body.
- 9). Remove the wiring harness connectors from the air compressor, power steering pump and alternator. Remove the high- and low-pressure lines from the air compressor and the power steering pump, using the appropriate line wrench. Unbolt the accessories and remove them from the engine.

Disconnect the fuel lines at the fuel rail, using the appropriate line wrench. Jack up the vehicle, using the floor jack. Support it with jack stands. Remove the starter, using the appropriate sockets. Disconnect the exhaust pipes from the manifolds, using the appropriate socket. Remove the flywheel housing access cover, using the appropriate socket. Matchmark the torque converter to the driveplate, then remove the bolts, using the appropriate socket. - 11
Remove the upper bellhousing-to-engine bolts, using the appropriate socket. Loosen the bottom bolts. Lower the vehicle off the jack stands, using the floor jack. Attach the engine hoist to the engine, ensuring you don't attach it to the intake manifold. Jack up the hoist enough to take the weight of the engine off the engine mounts. - 12
Remove the engine mount bolts, using the appropriate socket. Raise the engine off the mounts, using the hoist. Slide the floor jack under the transmission housing. Remove the bottom bolts you loosened earlier. Lift the engine out of the engine compartment, using the hoist.
